M-M Scheme Details
A mentor is an experienced person who advises and helps someone with less experience over a period of time. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a mentor as a trusted counselor or guide. A mentor helps a mentee with their development. The mentor's role is to guide, give advice, and support the mentee. A mentor can help a person (mentee) improve their abilities and skills through observation, assessment, modeling, and guidance.
Objectives of the Mentor-Mentee Scheme:
To achieve these objectives, a well-structured mentor-mentee system has been developed at the college. Teachers are assigned as mentors to a number of students under this system. The IQAC prepares the mentor-mentee list, which is published on the college website and notice board. Mentors collect personal and educational information about their mentees, focusing on the students' needs and regularly updating their progress. The mentor establishes consistent communication and provides counseling as needed, closely monitoring the students' growth. The mentor also serves as a bridge between the parents and the college, regularly updating parents on their child's progress and college updates.
Our ultimate goal through higher education is to mold and develop the overall personality and progress of students from rural areas. After all, students are the pillars of society. Fifty percent of the students come from nearby villages with diverse socio-economic backgrounds. As they come from rural areas, the college environment is entirely new to them, leading to various challenges. The college offers three programs: Arts, Science, and B.Voc. For the B.Voc. program, the Nodal Officer acts as the mentor for all students. For other programs, the IQAC counts the number of admitted students and prepares a list. Full-time teachers are then allocated the same number of students by dividing the total number of students by the number of teachers. Each mentor's list contains mentees from all three classes. Third-year students from the list assist both the students and the mentor, acting as a bridge between newcomers and the mentor. The mentor teacher serves as the primary parent for the mentee on the college campus. If the mentor notices any issues or needs of the student, they refer the matter to the corresponding department and continuously follow up to find a solution.
The college uses social media to interact with students. Occasionally, students discuss syllabus difficulties with teachers via WhatsApp groups and Google Classroom. Study materials and tests are conducted on Google Classroom. Instructions and suggestions are also posted on the respective WhatsApp groups. Teachers maintain records of students' regular attendance. If a student is irregular, the mentor informs their parents and inquires about their progress. Each subject teacher strives to improve student outcomes. Teachers keep records in a diary. At the beginning of the academic year, a diagnostic test is conducted to assess students' prior knowledge. The admission committee counsels students during the admission process. An orientation program is organized to familiarize students with various subjects. The mentor conducts regular meetings and discussions on various problems such as academic, financial, and family issues. Slow and fast learners are identified, and remedial classes are conducted to enhance their academic performance. Remedial classes for English are also organized for students' academic improvement.
